The Issue

Recently, I experienced a frustrating situation where I was not allowed to board a super off-peak train from Penzance to Paddington with my surfboard, even though the train remained mostly empty for the entire journey. This incident highlighted a significant issue with Great Western Railway's current policy, which only permits surfboards on sleeper trains.

This policy is not only illogical but also detrimental to the tourism industry in Cornwall and Devon. Surfing is a major attraction in these regions, drawing tourists from all over. By restricting surfboard transportation to sleeper trains, GWR is effectively discouraging surfers from using public transportation. Many are forced to rely on cars, contributing to environmental pollution and unnecessary congestion.

Moreover, it seems unreasonable to permit bicycles on intercity trains while denying the same courtesy to surfboards. With bikes allowed in designated storage areas, there’s no reason why surfboards cannot be similarly accommodated, particularly during off-peak hours when trains are less crowded.

Allowing surfboards on intercity trains during off-peak times can boost tourism, support local economies, and encourage sustainable travel. By revising this policy, GWR can demonstrate their commitment to customer satisfaction, environmental responsibility, and the local communities they serve.

Additionally this policy directly removes independence from those who cannot drive and want to escape problems they may have at home through surfing. It hinders efforts of charities such as the wave project and city kids surfing.

I urge Great Western Railway to reconsider and change their surfboard policy for intercity trains. Permit surfboards to be stored in bike storage areas during off-peak times, aligning with the allowance for bicycles. This change would rectify an unfair rule, support regional tourism, reduce car emissions, and make train travel more accessible for surfers.

Please join me in urging GWR to adopt a more reasonable and environmentally friendly surfboard policy. Your signature can make a difference in promoting green travel and supporting the vibrant surfing culture in Cornwall and Devon. Sign the petition today!
