There have been too many accidents and lives lost in the Willunga and McLaren Vale region in the last 10 years. Our roads need to change to create a safer driving environment.
 
I myself was involved in a frightening car accident at the Malpas and Main Road intersection. As a driver who knows the roads well, it was an unsettling experience that emphasised the importance of safety measures at this junction. Despite my familiarity, I struggled to see over the high guard rails and couldn't adequately assess oncoming traffic. Sadly, the current "give way" signs, paired with these barriers, create a hazardous situation for all drivers, especially those in smaller vehicles like mine.

It shouldn't be a prerequisite to be intimately acquainted with every facet of the local roads to ensure one’s safety while driving. Every driver, whether new to the area or a long-time resident, deserves the confidence that their journey will be safe, especially at busy intersections such as Malpas and Main Road. This intersection poses a significant risk not only due to the insufficient visibility caused by the guard rails but also because "give way" signs do not mandate a complete stop, which is often critical in high-traffic or visually obstructed areas.

Official statistics have shown that intersections with stop signs experience fewer accidents compared to those with yield or "give way" signs, as they require all drivers to fully stop and assess the situation. However even if drivers do stop the guard rails need to be lowered in order for drivers to fully assess the situation on the road.

Therefore, I propose two essential changes that can greatly enhance the safety of this intersection:

1. Replace the "give way" signs on Malpas and Binney Road with stop signs to ensure that all drivers must stop and can safely assess the traffic flow before proceeding.

2. Lower the guard railing at the intersection to improve visibility for drivers in smaller vehicles, allowing them a clear view of oncoming traffic and reducing the potential for accidents.

Not only will these changes protect local residents and commuters, but they will also support the overall safety of road users in our community. Let's make driving in our area less treacherous and ensure a safer travel experience for everyone.
