Change Florida School Dress Code Policy

Change Florida School Dress Code Policy

The Issue

When I was ten, I went through puberty earlier than most of my peers. Being the only Black student in a predominantly white school, it was difficult to fit in. I watched other girls wear fashionable clothes while I was dress coded for wearing the same outfits. Forced to wear sweatpants, jeans, and baggy shirts just to avoid dress code violations, I felt stifled and marginalized. This experience has stayed with me, and I don't want other girls to go through the same ordeal.

The current dress code policies in Florida schools are outdated and disproportionately target female students. Girls are required to cover their shoulders with sleeves at least three fingers wide. Yet, boys who sag their pants often face no consequences. This unequal enforcement creates a stigma and unfairly punishes young girls for their choices of self-expression. Additionally, female students may be dress-coded for wearing items such as leggings or spandex, which is often deemed 'too tight' by school policies. This reasoning appears unnecessary and raises concerns about fairness and potential gender bias in dress code enforcement. When a female student is dress-coded, parents are often contacted to bring a change of clothing, which can be disruptive—particularly for families with limited financial resources or parents working demanding schedules to support their household.

Dress codes should allow girls to have the freedom to express themselves while maintaining basic decency. As long as their attire covers the essentials—such as keeping private areas covered—girls should be allowed to wear sleeveless tops, exposing their shoulders if they choose. This balance offers students a chance to express themselves while maintaining a school-appropriate setting.

Parents should have a say in what their children wear, rather than blanket restrictions from school authorities. This policy change would allow parents to regulate and decide the parameters of what is suitable for their children, fostering individual expression reflective of the diverse cultures and backgrounds present in Florida schools.

Let us work together to create a modern dress code policy that respects individuality and promotes equality. By bringing attention to this issue, we can prevent other girls from feeling marginalized in a critical phase of their development.

Sign the petition to call for change in Florida's school dress code policies, advocating for fair and equal treatment of all students.
