The Issue

Living in the vibrant and otherwise peaceful neighborhood of Pilsen, our neighbors understand the need for helicopters in medical emergencies to save lives in getting those in distress to the medical district. However, addition of helicopters for tourism and the escalating frequency of helicopters passing overhead has begun to severely disrupt the tranquility of our community. Each day, the deafening noise from these flights shatters the peace and quiet we have long enjoyed, transforming our once serene environment into a cacophony.

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders notes that exposure to loud noises, such as aircraft, can lead to sleep disturbances, hearing loss, and heightened stress levels—an alarming reality many of us are now living with. In our neighborhood, families with children, elderly residents, and even pets are subjected to these disturbances, affecting our quality of life and overall well-being.

We appeal to the City of Chicago Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration, Mayor Brandon Johnson, Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez, Alderman Jason C. Ervin, and local helicopter services to critically evaluate and modify current flight paths to either reduce their frequency or to reroute them over less densely populated areas. There are existing cases of successful collaborations such as in Los Angeles where routes were adjusted to minimize disruptions to residential areas without compromising safety.

Implementing more considerate flight paths can reduce noise pollution substantially, offering our neighborhood the much-needed respite. Constructive solutions are possible, and examples around the world demonstrate that community voices can lead to meaningful change.

Please join us in urging these authorities to listen to our plea. Sign this petition to restore peace and tranquility to our beloved community.
