The Issue

Families shouldn’t have to guess whether a product is safe to eat.

Millions of Americans are allergic to everyday ingredients that aren’t covered by the Top 9 allergens.

If you have a child with a life-threatening food allergy outside of the Top 9, you know the fear that comes with a food label that doesn’t actually tell you what’s in the food.

You read the label. You check it again. Then you see words like “natural flavors” or “spices” and you’re stuck.

What does that mean? Is the allergen in there? Is it not? Is it made with something that could hurt my child?

So you call the company.

I’ve spent hours doing this. Calling. Waiting. Explaining. Asking the same simple question over and over: "What actually is "natural flavoring" in your product?"

And sometimes the answer is, “We can’t tell you. It’s proprietary.”

How is that acceptable?

A company has the right to protect a recipe, but parents should also have the right to know what they’re feeding their children with life-threatening food allergies.

The FDA needs to close these loopholes and require companies to clearly list every ingredient in their products. No more hiding behind “natural flavors.”
