The Issue

As a lifelong resident and advocate for animal welfare, I feel compelled to raise my voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Current farm animal welfare laws in New York State fall short of protecting the basic needs and rights of farm animals. Many animals live under deplorable conditions, deprived of adequate food, medical care, and humane living spaces. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, thousands of complaints and violations concerning animal welfare go unaddressed each year, indicating a dire need for reform in how we regulate and enforce these laws.

Farm animals, like all creatures, deserve to live free from fear and suffering. It is time for New York State to lead by example and enact laws that ensure humane treatment for all farm animals. Specifically, I urge lawmakers to strengthen oversight by increasing routine inspections, enforce stricter penalties for violations, and provide greater support for rescue and rehabilitation efforts coordinated by local animal welfare organizations.

Neighboring states have already adopted progressive reforms by banning certain extreme confinement practices and mandating better living conditions for farm animals. For example, California’s Proposition 2, adopted in 2008, prohibits the confinement of certain farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs. Similar measures could be adapted to fit the unique agricultural context of New York.

The time to act is now. By signing this petition, you lend your voice to the call for justice and compassion. Let us come together to ensure that the farm animals of New York State receive the care and respect they so desperately need and deserve. Your support can pave the way for a future where all creatures are treated with dignity and kindness.

Please sign this petition to demand stronger and more humane farm animal welfare laws in New York State.
