The Issue

My daughter, Jasmine Joan, age 12, was a vibrant, loving child until she was overtaken by aggressive brain tumours. As her parents, we witnessed her transformation firsthand; her personality changed, and she started suffering from prefrontal lobe seizures that led to self-harming behaviours beyond her control. It broke our hearts to watch her in such pain and emotional distress, yet the medical team, fearful of protocol constraints, refused to adjust her pain management or provide sedation.

Our situation isn't unique. In England, the current end-of-life guidelines for pediatric care often leave families feeling helpless and unsupported during the most challenging times. No child should suffer in pain at the end of their life, and no family should endure the trauma of watching their child in distress, fearful of causing self-harm.

According to a 2021 study by Palliative Medicine, many parents of terminally ill children feel that their concerns and observations about their child's suffering are disregarded. In Jasmine's case, our pleas for compassionate care were dismissed, reflecting a broader systemic issue. These guidelines, designed to ensure safety, instead sometimes prevent the timely and compassionate management of pain and distress in pediatric patients.

There is a pressing need for more flexible and compassionate policies. We call on the Department of Health and Social Care to review and revise these end-of-life care guidelines, incorporating input from healthcare professionals, families, and experts in pediatric palliative care.

We propose establishing a framework that prioritizes the child’s comfort and dignity, enabling healthcare providers to tailor pain management and sedation based on individual needs without fear of bureaucratic repercussions. Training programs should also be implemented to ensure that healthcare teams are better equipped to handle complex cases with empathy and understanding.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a future where no family has to endure what we did. Let us work together to ensure our children receive the compassion and relief they deserve in their final days. Please sign and support this petition to bring about crucial changes to pediatric end-of-life care in England. Together, we can make a difference.
