Change Copperas Cove Adoptable Dog Breeds Restriction

Change Copperas Cove Adoptable Dog Breeds Restriction
The Issue
The City of Copperas Cove has a dog breed restriction on Pitbulls, Chow Chows, and Rottweilers. It is believed by the City that these breeds are a bite risk factor if adopted out. They said that these dogs can bite if they are adopted out which can cause issues with Animal Control. What is not being mentioned is how ANY dog of ANY breed can be bite a person. It is a misconception that these breeds “lock jaws” when they bite.
According to Dr. I. Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia, “no dog, of any breed or mix, has an anatomical structure in their jaw that functions as a locking mechanism.”
The word ”Pitbull” is used to describe “Bully Breeds”. These breeds are American Pitbull Terrier, American Bully, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldog, and Staffordshire Bull Terrior.
If people educated themselves about these breeds more, they would understood that:
“Pitbulls”: Bred for hunting, herding, guardian purposes, and are primarily used as companions. They are eager to please and have a natural love for people.
Chow Chows: Bred for pulling sleds and guardianship. They build a strong bond with their owner and are very loyal.
Rottweilers: Bred for herding and pulling carts with livestock. They are people dogs and loyal to their family.
Copperas Cove is the only city around that has a ban on adopting these breeds out.
There is no such thing as a bad dog, just a bad owner.
Take it from me who has been bitten multiple times as a child by a small breed dog, but has never been bitten by any of my 2 “Pitbull” mixes, 1 Purebred Pitbull, and 1 American Bully.
Copperas Cove should allow these breeds to have an equal amount of adoption chances just like any other breed that is in their facility.
Let this get to the Mayor of Copperas Cove. Mayor Dan Yancey dyancey@copperascovetx.gov
