Change CDL Eligibility Requirements in the U.S.

Change CDL Eligibility Requirements in the U.S.
The Issue
As a commercial truck driver for a major carrier, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges posed by foreign drivers who are not fully acquainted with American road laws and the English language. Many times, I have seen them disobeying traffic regulations, posing a threat to road safety. Additionally, there's the issue of companies exploiting these drivers, who often work for lower wages, undercutting hardworking American citizens.
I've also observed instances where multiple drivers operate within a single semi-truck, ensuring non-stop driving by rotating shifts, which raises concerns about regulations surrounding rest periods and road safety. It's disheartening to see such practices, which undermine the standards and regulations that U.S. citizens must adhere to for commercial driving.
The inability or lack of willingness of some foreign drivers to learn English compromises their ability to fully comply with national traffic laws, potentially endangering lives on the road. Moreover, the economic impact is significant as it may lead to job loss for many citizens who have dedicated their lives to this profession.
We propose a change: only individuals born in the United States or those who have been naturalized citizens for a minimum of 20 years should be eligible to obtain a commercial driving license (CDL). This change would ensure that everyone operating commercial vehicles is fully versed in our laws and communications, ensuring safer roads and fairer competition for jobs.
Implementing stricter CDL eligibility requirements would improve road safety, support American workers, and uphold the integrity of the commercial driving profession. Join me in urging lawmakers to take this necessary step. Please sign this petition to advocate for changes that will benefit both the safety and economy of our nation.
