Yesterday, I travelled to Westminster to meet with the Government Minister who is taking the lead on Changing Places in Parliament, Rishi Sunak MP. It was a very positive meeting. Rishi is very much on board with the Changing Places campaign, due to strong campaigners in his constituency. This is what he wrote in December 2017:
"The key goal should be to amend our building regulations, requiring Changing Places to be installed at key buildings like shopping centres, train stations and tourist attractions. Although regulations were amended in 2013 to describe Changing Places as ‘desirable’, this language needs to be strengthened and made mandatory.
These changes will face opposition (as they did in 1995), but done proportionately, practically, and with reasonable time for institutions to implement, I believe this is an appropriate step to take."
Yesterday, I took the message to him that Changing Places need to be installed in ALL new large public buildings as they are being built and renovated, as welll as any places that people are likely to want to spend the whole day.
I took all your comments, with me, your voices, as evidence of need. I took him evidence of physical and emotional harm being caused by the lack of Changing Places toilets in our communities.
After our meeting yesterday Rishi was due to meet with lawyers, to see how best the regulations can be strengthened. I have no timescale for how long it will be before we hear of any changes, nor how stringent these changes will be, but I believe we are on the right track for change. I will continue campaigning until that happens.
