Change animal laws in South Australia

The issue

In South Australia, the lack of empathy and respect for our feline friends is astounding. It's as if their lives matter less simply because they cannot speak for themselves. Keeping cats brings with it a responsibility—a duty to ensure their well-being and safety. It's not just a choice but an obligation to protect them. Cats should be kept indoors or in a secure outdoor space from which they cannot escape. Importantly, before any outdoor activity, they must be desexed and vaccinated. Anything less is reckless and cruel.

The current legislation fails to adequately protect cats from harm, both from human negligence and the inherent dangers posed by external environments. Numerous reports indicate that outdoor cats are at risk of traffic accidents, poisoning, diseases and attacks by other animals. Moreover, non-desexed cats contribute to unwanted litters, exacerbating the problem of stray and feral cats in our community.

Evidence from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) Australia underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership. Statistics reveal that desexed and confined cats live longer, healthier lives. Responsible pet ownership reduces the risk of injury and disease transmission to other animals and people. Our community must embrace these practices to foster a harmonious relationship between humans, cats, and the environment.

We urge the City Councils to reconsider and implement stricter regulations, laws and consequences for cat ownership. Mandatory desexing and vaccination, along with the requirement to keep cats indoors or in secure enclosures, should be enforced.

Currently, in South Australia cats who were born after 1 July 2018 need to be desexed within 6 months of ownership UNLESS you they exempt - ie, health conditions, breeder etc.

This will not only safeguard the cats but also protect the local wildlife and contribute to a safer environment for all.

By supporting this petition, you are standing up for those who do not have a voice. You are championing a vision of a community where every cat is cared for and respected. Your signature signifies a commitment to creating a more compassionate environment, where legislative change ensures the safety and well-being of all animals.

Speak up. Demand accountability. Report neglect. Support desexing and vaccination programs. Do not turn away. Do not let indifference define us.

Sign this petition to call for immediate action and make South Australia a role model for animal welfare.
