Championing Mental Health: Support Athletes of Color Facing Racism

Championing Mental Health: Support Athletes of Color Facing Racism
The Issue
Athletes of color face unique challenges both on and off the field. While their physical talents are celebrated, their mental well-being is often overlooked, especially when dealing with racism and discrimination. From derogatory remarks from fans and teammates to systemic barriers within their sports organizations, athletes of color frequently encounter intense environments that take a toll on their mental health. "Racism is a mental health issue because racism causes trauma" (MHA) and this can cause deep emotional and psychological wounds, leading to anxiety, depression, and even PTSD. These issues are worsened by the immense pressure to perform at high levels while maintaining a strong public image. Yet, many athletes lack access to adequate mental health resources to help them navigate these psychological struggles. This disparity not only affects the athletes as people but also limits their potential to excel in their sport and as individuals, often ruining or diminishing their love for the game. By emphasizing mental health resources for athletes of color, particularly those who have endured experiences of racism, we can create a safer and more inclusive environment in sports.
The problem with resources in act today, is that they are used as a fast solution to psychological struggles, instead of being intertwined into an athlete's daily routine. "Athletes see a sport psychologist as someone to work with when there is something wrong rather than as an intrinsic part of their athletic development" (Kearney). Sports psychology should be mandated as a part of an athlete's regular schedule, just like physical training, to ensure their mental well-being receives the priority it deserves. When all athletes receive this support as a standard practice, it normalizes seeking help, removing any feelings of discomfort or embarrassment that might otherwise prevent them from addressing their needs.
These mandated mental health resources will help athletes cope with the mental struggles they may face, bettering their performance and more importantly sustaining their own sense of self worth and overall well being. By prioritizing mental health alongside physical training, we can create a healthier, more supportive environment that empowers athletes to thrive both on and off the field.
