The Issue

The UK government has acted unilaterally, by giving away British ownership of the Chagos Islands.

An incredibly important decision like this should have been discussed in Parliament, or it should have gone to a referendum, as it affects our long-term position in the world, and our ability to help defend smaller states from aggressive states on the world stage.

On a similar theme, a question mark now hangs over the future British control of Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands.

Parliament needs to discuss rescinding the Chagos Islands agreement, and putting the question of ownership to a public vote. Parliament also needs to agree to put any future question of sovereignty of overseas territories to the British public, in the form of referendums. Such decisions are beyond just one or two people who happen to hold cabinet posts.
