The Issue
The Mumbai Maritime Board's decision to commercialize beloved waterfronts like Carter Road Promenade and Bandra Bandstand has raised significant concern among residents and environmentalists alike. The introduction of LED hoardings, stalls, kiosks, and various forms of advertising—including unipoles and balloons—not only commercializes these natural public spaces but also detracts from their aesthetic and environmental value. Leasing land for commercial activities further transforms these serene areas into congested, commercial zones.
Our waterfronts are precious community assets, offering respite and recreational opportunities in the bustling city of Mumbai. These promenade sites are not only vital for the physical and mental well-being of locals but also act as green lungs for the city, improving air quality and supporting biodiversity. Intrusive commercial activities threaten to diminish these benefits.
Moreover, the installation of LED hoardings and other advertising structures can contribute to light pollution, which negatively impacts local wildlife and disrupts the natural ambiance of the waterfronts. Stalls and kiosks could lead to increased waste and littering, pressurising an already strained waste management system in the region.
We propose that the Mumbai Maritime Board reconsider its policy to emphasize preserving the natural beauty and public utility of these spaces. More sustainable and community-friendly initiatives should be explored, like setting up cultural events, fitness zones, or community gardens that align with the character and needs of the local residents.
It is imperative that any development or commercialization plan is devised with careful consideration of environmental impacts and local community needs. We urge the authorities to engage in open consultations with residents, environmental experts, and local stakeholders to develop sustainable alternatives that benefit everyone.
Sign this petition to urge the Mumbai Maritime Board to halt the excessive commercialization of Carter Road Promenade and Bandra Bandstand and ensure these spaces remain accessible and pristine for future generations. Together, we can protect our waterfronts from becoming over-commercialized, ensuring they continue to serve as cherished public havens.
