The Issue

I am a patient who is dissatisfied with the added inconvenience of having to sign for receiving my eyeglasses prescription. This rule, which was recently updated by the FTC, is not only inconvenient but disruptive. For parents with children, the endeavor is even more challenging.

The American Optometric Association states that 60% of patients rely on corrective lenses. Putting this regulation into place means that a significant number of people are affected, and are compelled to spend additional time in uncomfortable circumstances due to the obligation to sign this unnecessary document every time a new prescription is given. The prescription belongs to the patient, and in no other medical condition is a patient required to acknowledge receipt of this nature.

This new ruling does not foster a healthy competition in the eyewear industry. Rather, it burdens the patients unnecessarily and makes the process more cumbersome. Indeed, overregulation leads to creating needless red tape, hindering the efficiency of service delivery to those who may struggle with vision restrictions already.

We urge the FTC to reconsider this mandate, eliminating the need for patients to sign their eyeglasses prescriptions and thereby reducing unnecessary inconvenience. As someone who is directly affected, I see firsthand how this added measure creates obstacles rather than contributing to a streamlined process.

Let your voice be heard! Sign this petition to demonstrate your opposition to this inconvenient ruling and send a message to the FTC Commissioners @RKSlaughterFTC, @linakhanFTC, @BedoyaFTC, @MHolyoakFTC, and @AFergusonFTC on Twitter (X)! Together, we can make a difference.
