I, like so many of us out there, have been on the receiving end of growing financial pressures. Inflation, mounting debt, and steadily rising prices have become an all too familiar part of daily life. One significant contributor to this financial uncertainty is unregulated monopolies, like the one that American Electric Power (AEP) seems to have on energy. Their outrageous rate hikes and lack of transparency strike at the heart of us, the consumers who have little to no other options for their energy needs.

According to ProPublica's 2012 report, AEP controls a significant portion of the energy market, curtailing competition and giving them a dangerous amount of control over pricing. These excessive rates have caused severe financial strain on average American households, with households reportedly spending as much as 7% of their income on energy alone, as indicated by a U.S. Energy Information Administration 2019 report.

Moreover, AEP's lack of transparency is disconcerting. Consumers have the right to know how price determinations are made and any future pricing strategy forecasts. This withholding of information makes it impossible for consumers to plan strategically and limits our ability to make informed decisions about our energy usage and expenses.
