The Issue

Do you live, work or shop in Centerville, Ohio? Did you know you’re being surveilled without your consent? Once you look, you will see them at every major intersection around the city.

The City of Centerville’s use of Flock Cameras is deeply concerning . These cameras, utilized across our city, collect and potentially store vast amounts of data about residents' movements and vehicle registration. It's a breach of our privacy and an overreach into the daily lives of law abiding citizens who live in or visit Centerville.

The Flock Cameras, touted as an innovative tool for crime prevention, track license plates and collect vehicle data without individual consent. While safety is of utmost importance for our community, the method employed raises several red flags about privacy rights and data handling practices.

According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, such technology often lacks transparency and over time can become a tool for unwarranted surveillance.

Studies indicate that the presence of surveillance cameras has minimal impact on crime rates. Instead of invasive measures, we need policies that respect constitutional rights and foster trust between law enforcement and the community. Effective community partnerships, increased police presence, and investment in youth programs can strongly contribute to safer neighborhoods.

While other cities have seen similar technologies implemented, concerns about privacy have prompted reevaluation and even removal of such systems. One glaring example is the City of Dayton, whose City Council just decided to end its Flock contract and the  use of these cameras after public outcry over privacy issues.

The citizens and visitors of Centerville  demand the Centerville City Council to act in favor of its citizens' privacy and civil liberties. Other measures to ensure community safety should be considered. Centerville’s identity as a community that values its residents’ welfare must be preserved. Please join me in urging our city leaders to prioritize our rights by signing this petition today. Together, we can advocate for a more accountable and transparent approach to public safety in Centerville.
