The Issue

As a Tajik from Khorasan, (modern day Afghanistan) this day is deeply personal to me. With all the struggles Tajiks face in Afghanistan and the challenges Tajiks endure in Uzbekistan, we need a day that unites us across borders. November 23, the legacy of Ismoil Somoni, can be that day—a reminder that we share one heritage, one culture, and one history. For Tajiks everywhere, including the diaspora, it’s a chance to stand together and celebrate our identity with pride.

November 23rd should be celebrated as Tajik People’s Day because it honors the legacy of Ismoil Somoni, a symbol of Tajik unity and culture. During his reign, the region experienced a golden age of literature, science, and statehood that significantly influenced Central Asia. This day serves not only as a commemoration of the immense contributions of Tajiks to the world but also as an opportunity to reaffirm our cultural and historical bonds.

Today, millions of Tajiks reside not only in Tajikistan but also in Khorasan,(modern day Afghanistan), Uzbekistan, and across the world. Many face societal challenges and discrimination in their respective countries. A day dedicated to celebrating our shared heritage can foster unity and pride among Tajik communities, reinforcing a sense of belonging and identity. It is a reminder that despite the geographical borders that separate us, we are united by our common language, history, and cultural achievements.

The recognition of November 23rd as Tajik People’s Day would serve as an annual event where Tajiks from all over the world can come together to celebrate their accomplishments, learn about their history, and promote cultural understanding and solidarity. Educational events, cultural fairs, and community gatherings on this day could reinforce our ties and educate the younger generation about the pivotal role that Tajiks have played in shaping world civilizations.

We call on national and international cultural institutions, as well as UNESCO, to recognize November 23 as Tajik People’s Day. By officially declaring this day, we take a significant step towards preserving the rich legacy of Tajik culture and ensuring that future generations can continue to celebrate and learn about our invaluable contributions to human history.

Please sign this petition to make Tajik People’s Day a recognized celebration worldwide. Together, we can inspire recognition and respect for our shared heritage and ensure our rich history and culture are celebrated for years to come.
