Cease use of 'Welcome to Country' in veteran services
The issue
As a veteran who has proudly served Australia, it is deeply unsettling to experience the inclusion of the 'Welcome to Country' ceremonies in services that honor our veterans, such as ANZAC and Remembrance Days. These ceremonies, while having their own significance, are not appropriate during events that are specifically meant to commemorate the sacrifices and bravery of those who have served in the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
The 'Welcome to Country' ceremony, has deeply divided opinions of all Australians. However, its implementation during veteran commemorative services shifts the focus away from the intent of these ceremonies, which is to honour and remember the heroes who fought for our nation's freedom.
ANZAC and Remembrance Days are solemn occasions dedicated to recognizing the courage, sacrifice, and service of veterans. These ceremonies should remain solely focused on those who have served and should reflect the military traditions and history that are intrinsic to these events. Including unrelated rituals can dilute the solemnity and the historical significance we gather to observe.
We, therefore, call on the National President of the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSLA) and all State branch presidents to reflect on this matter seriously. Removing the 'Welcome to Country' from these services will preserve the dignity and focused commemoration of Australian veterans, ensuring that these ceremonies stay true to the spirit in which they were intended.
By signing this petition, you support maintaining the integrity of veteran commemorative services and ensuring they remain dedicated to honoring those who have served our country. Let's take a stand to keep these ceremonies focused on what truly matters: appreciating and remembering our veterans.
