Cease reporting police presence on gps navigation services

The Issue

I feel strongly about the feature in GPS navigation services that allows drivers to report police presence. This feature, available in widely-used apps like Google Maps and Waze, provides drivers with real-time alerts of law enforcement in their vicinity. While initially intended for reasons such as avoiding traffic congestion, it has unintended and potentially dangerous consequences.

By alerting drivers of police presence, these apps may inadvertently aid individuals who wish to evade law enforcement, and as a result, undermine the efforts of police to maintain safety and order. Someone who is avoiding law enforcement for serious offenses might be able to evade arrest because they were warned of an officer ahead. Without this information, accountable individuals could be apprehended during what begins as a routine traffic stop, potentially leading to the capture of those guilty of more serious crimes.

Statistics show that minor traffic violations often lead to the arrest of individuals with outstanding warrants or those involved in other unlawful activities. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, a significant percentage of felony arrests occur during routine traffic stops. Enabling technology that encourages drivers to circumvent these checks can be detrimental to public safety.

Moreover, this feature can foster a false sense of security among drivers, encouraging reckless behavior under the assumption that they'll be forewarned of police presence ahead. Roads could become more hazardous as drivers pay more attention to an app's warnings than the road itself.

To address these concerns, I urge GPS navigation service providers, including Google, Apple, and Waze, to remove the feature that allows users to report police presence. Instead, these companies could focus on other ways to enhance driver safety, such as promoting safe driving practices or offering real-time updates on road conditions without specific reference to law enforcement presence.

Your support is crucial in making our roads safer and assisting law enforcement in upholding the law. Please sign this petition to demonstrate to these tech giants the public demand for responsible features in GPS navigation that prioritize public safety over convenient warnings. Together, we can create a safer environment for everyone on the road.
