Tuesday was one of the biggest days in our fight to remove violent murder videos from Facebook and YouTube.

We held a press conference at the National Press Club, and together with 150,000+ of you who’ve signed my petition, we took a significant step to hold Facebook accountable for allowing videos that violate their terms of service – including the video of my daughter Alison’s murder. Even this week, more videos of my daughter Alison’s killing were uploaded to Facebook. Thousands of these videos have been put on Facebook and shared since Alison’s murder in 2015.

I can’t abide by Facebook's glaring refusal to remove and prevent this kind of content from being uploaded to their platform. So, with the Georgetown Law School’s Civil Rights Clinic, we filed a formal FTC complaint against Facebook, demanding they be held accountable for these violent murder videos on their platform – videos the company profits from and drives traffic to. Hundreds of media outlets covered our press conference.

From CNN to AP, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Independent, to VICE and countless others, the world heard our message that big social media companies like Facebook and YouTube – and big media companies like Gray Television, which owns the copyright of the video of my daughter’s death – have to act when they know violent murder videos are being shared and uploaded to the Internet.

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen said exactly what we’ve known for years: platforms like Facebook can prevent violent and inappropriate content from being uploaded, shared, and trafficked on their platform. They just choose not to because it hurts their bottom line. Well, that has never been acceptable, and now there’s a real moment when all eyes are on Facebook for the company to stop lying to their investors, advertisers, and users and follow their terms of service to prevent violent videos – like the videos of my daughter’s murder – from being uploaded and shared to their platform.

Thank you again for joining this effort. We won’t quit until videos of Alison’s death are off of platforms like Facebook and YouTube.
