OVER 2000 CATS and DOGS killed by Antifreeze since 2012, with numbers still rising! - THIS HAS TO STOP NOW!!!
Ethylene glycol is a highly toxic chemical found in antifreeze. It is used in cars to prevent the engine from freezing in winter and acts as a coolant in summer to prevent from overheating.
This toxic substance can be spilled when poured or leaked from the engine and run in to puddles. This chemical has a very sweet taste which is very delicious to cats and dogs, all wildlife alike are drawn to Ethylene glycol.
HOW to protect my pet from Ethylene glycol antifreeze:
• Avoid using Ethylene glycol Antifreeze products
• Never use in outdoor water features
• If you do have antifreeze products, store safely away from animals (and children) - a single lick from a bottle can be fatal for a cat
• Clean up any spillages immediately and keep cats away from affected area until dry
• IF YOU SUSPECT YOUR CAT HAS INGESTED ANTIFREEZE, CONTACT YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY
Below are the symptoms:
Stage 1: (within 30 minutes of ingestion): The signs include lethargy, vomiting, incoordination, excessive urination, excessive thirst, hypothermia (low body temperature), seizures, and coma.
Stage 2 - 12 to 24 hours after ingestion: Some of the signs seem to dramatically improve, luring pet owners into a false sense of security. However, during this stage, pets become dehydrated, and develop an elevated breathing and heart rate.
Stage 3 - (36-72 hours after ingestion): At this stage, signs of severe kidney dysfunction, which is characterized by swollen, painful kidneys and the production of minimal to no urine, may occur. Progressive depression, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting, seizures, coma, and death may be seen.
SYMPTOMS (As little as one teaspoon of antifreeze when ingested by a cat or a tablespoon or two for a dog (depending on their size), can be fatal)
ETHYLENE GLYCOL POISONING in CATS has a reported FATALITY RATE of around 91-97%, in DOGS the survival rate is much higher with a greater chance with around 44-70%
The PDSA is the UK funded vet charity who helps sick animals in their time of need. Thank goodness they are there for those that need them. However. When antifreeze makes a pet so terribly poorly, we call on their funds. Without this product causing harm and robbing lovely lives, the PDSA would be able to give those funds to more people. Those that are lucky enough to survive would require ongoing treatment, hence further funds from this wonderful charity.
We lost our cat, Burt to Antifreeze poisoning on 19th November 2019. He was just 2 years old! This was heartbreaking! I'd never wish for anyone to go through this. How can such a dangerous chemical causing such DEVASTATION be allowed? DEATH is NOT something that should come with a product.
ETHYLENE GLYCOL is also extremely harmful to humans and the environment too!
The SYMPTOMS and DANGERS TO HUMANS
• Hyperventilation
• Hematuria
• Kidney pain
• Nausea/Vomiting
• Abdominal pain
• Dizziness
• Lack of alertness
• Change in lip/nail colour
• Fatigue
• Convulsions
• Decrease in urine output - consumption of antifreeze results in decreased production of urine in the human body. While in some cases the production of urine may fall, in others the production usually stops which may cause death within 24 hours.
Very similar to what the cats and dogs go through, isn't it?! Can you imagine the pain? Now only that you ARE able to tell someone how you are suffering and the pain YOU are in, that's so much harder for a sick animal who just wants to sleep!
• Harmful to humans- a person who consumes water polluted by coolant/antifreeze can ingest unhealthy amounts of lead, leading to lead poisoning. Exposure to benzene can cause LEUKAEMIA
POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS:
ANTIFREEZE CAN:
• Pollute groundwater - feeding and damaging the plants/trees/crops growing with this harmful water, killing them.
• Pollute surface water - harming/killing life in natural water ponds/lakes/rivers
• Pollute drinking water - harming and potentially killing or giving life threatening illnesses
While in an engine, antifreeze can become contaminated with lead or fuel to the point where it must be managed as a hazardous waste
OUR ENVIRONMENT NEEDS ALL THE HELP IT CAN GET RIGHT NOW, THESE TYPES OF PRODUCTS WITH HARMFUL INGREDIENTS NEED TO BE GONE! TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A CHANGE
ETHYLENE GLYCOL ANTIFREEZE IS: TOXIC PLANTS, MARINE LIFE, AQUATIC LIFE AND WILDLIFE.
Is there an alternative product? YES!
PROPYLENE Glycol.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ETHYLENE & PROPYLENE?
The difference between Propylene Glycol and Ethylene Glycol in antifreeze comes down to both toxicity levels and efficiency of performance. Ethylene glycol possess far superior heat transfer properties whereas Propylene Glycol carries a very low toxicity
However. I have found a product which IS pet friendly...
https://peakauto.com/products/antifreeze-coolants/automotive/sierra/
Available in America! A Propylene based Antifreeze!
America HAS a pet friendly Antifreeze for cars, so why aren't we using pet friendly Antifreeze HERE?!
Then upon further research, I found one in the UK, a little more expensive, however, it IS pet friendly and environmentally friendly!
https://www.esedirect.co.uk/p-5671-non-corrosive-liquid-de-icer-15l.aspx
Cats and birds also die from antifreeze being added to water features in the winter months, to prevent them from freezing. This is horrendous as other wildlife will drink from the water, such as foxes. There are pet friendly products available to avoid such death.
HOW to safely dispose of Ethylene Glycol Antifreeze:
1. Do NOT pour it down a drain.
2. Do NOT pour it down the toilet.
3. Do NOT put it in the bin.
4. Do NOT pour it on the ground.
Take to your local service station, recycling centre or Seek your local council for disposal of hazardous waste https://www.gov.uk/hazardous-waste-disposal
Used antifreeze is considered hazardous waste, and if the Environment Agency trace improper disposal of the product back to yourself you will be liable for very heavy fines and possible prosecution. It is VERY IMPORTANT you do not just pour the used antifreeze down drains or sewers, as it can cause illness and death to organisms which consume it (including marine life, pets and humans)
There are also Ethylene glycol antifreeze products containing bittering agents available, however our environment's need is far greater.
This poison is in people's homes. Should a product so TOXIC and deadly be allowed in the hands of the public? It's classed as hazardous waste when it needs to be disposed of!
• ETHYLENE GLYCOL NEEDS TO BE MADE ILLEGAL
• ALL ANTIFREEZE LABLES REQUIRED BY LAW TO BE PET AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
PLEASE STOP OUR PETS DYING
PLEASE HELP OUR ENVIRONMENT
In memory of Burt and all the other animals that have lost their lives to this awful antifreeze, RIP X
❤️ ❤️ PLEASE MAKE A DIFFERENCE TODAY. THANK YOU ❤️❤️
