Cathal Crotty should be in prison

Das Problem

Natasha O'Brien went through the gruelling process and aftermath of being knocked unconscious by Cathal Crotty in an unprovoked attack while walking home in Limerick. She suffered severe concussion, a broken nose, arm injuries, eye injuries and lived in fear of a bleed on her brain for months afterwards which could have killed her. After the trial, at which she gave up her anonymity, the sentence for her attacker was given initially as three years, which is pitifully low but not surprising given our legal system. The judge was however more concerned with Cathal not being able to work again than the trauma that had been caused to Natasha. He ordered him to pay her €3,000 and said he could not conscientiously take away a young man's livelihood. He suspended the full sentence. Cathal Crotty is still walking free and working as a soldier in Limerick, he was never suspended or reprimanded over what he did. A full grown adult who bragged on Snapchat about knocking her out in four punches to teach her a lesson 'two to knock her out, two to keep her down'. A man whose angry face traumatised a woman so much that she could not carry on her own job as before to the best of her ability. A man who is ripe to reoffend. A man who should not be free. This is a call for a reassessment of the judge's call, an appeal to the sentence. The DPP needs to call it independently, but this petition could influence that call. This is not justice. It teaches victims of abuse not to speak up, and it lets people get away with assault based on their status in society. It is time we in Ireland stopped accepting this non protection of our citizens. Consequences for destroying a young woman's life should be followed. Otherwise how can we ever aspire to being a safe country where our sisters, wives, girlfriends and daughters can walk the streets at night? And how can we teach our sons that violence is not the answer, when our courts let them get away with attempted murder? Enough is enough. We want an appeal.
