As a result of the petition signed by hundreds for a cycle path from the new Bro Dinefwr school in Ffairfach, connecting it to the A483 trunk road, members of Transition Tywi, Carmarthenshire Cycle Forum and CTC were invited to attend a very positive meeting of the Transport Strategy and Infrastructure group on 23 July. The Divisional Manager, Simon Charles, outlined that Welsh Government Local Transport Grant funding of £150,000 has been allocated this year for the Tywi Valley cycle route, from Llandeillo to Carmarthen. This will contribute to a feasibility study of the wider scheme and pursuing the school link proposals. Charles, said: "We are serious about this scheme". A number of options, including using the old railway track, are being examined, but there are number of issues to be clarified before work can commence. These include detailed discussions with the school and adjacent landowners. This link to the A483 would form part of the wider ambitious project to create a wider commuter / tourism routes. A steering group comprised of all who attended this meeting has been formed to progress the plans and a stakeholders group will also be created. Anyone who wishes to join this group, which would be consulted in future, is invited to get in touch. The council is keen to complete the cycle route from Carmarthen to Llandeilo, which it believes would be "great for tourism". It would be for the benefit of all kinds of cyclists – commuters, families and sports – and suitable for walkers as well. "If we were successful in getting a large chunk of funding, potentially from Europe, construction of the route would take years and be completed in phases, as there are sensitive environmental and fishing rights issues to be considered. This year we are looking at continuing with feasibility and an emphasis on the eastern, Ffairfach section, especially connecting the school. We hope to commence work on the ground," said Simon Charles. Other cycle route work to be undertaken this year in the eastern County include looking to extend the Pembrey Canalside path, improve cycle safety around Llanelli, and connect routes in Dafen, Llangennech and Penceilogi. The Amman Valley route is to be extended and will eventually link up to the Swansea Valley. Transition Tywi's David Thorpe commented: "This is great news and undoubtedly due to the support of everyone who signed our petition. We look forward to working with all concerned to take the project forward. It would be good for the school, good for the children, and good for the local area." A public meeting of what’s going on to support cycling for everyone in the area with members of the above groups will take place on Tuesday 14 September upstairs in The Angel Inn, Heol Rhosmaen, Llandeilo, 7.30. Do come. Also on 1st September will be Transition Tywi's next steering group meeting (upstairs in The Angel Inn, Heol Rhosmaen, Llandeilo, 7.30). All welcome.
