On July 6 the following representatives of different organisations met at the site of the school to look at the options:
• Edward Thomas, Chair of the Governors of the Llandeilo primary school and local councillor;
• Lyn Brodrick, the East Carmarthenshire Schools Sports officer responsible for promoting cycling and Safe Routes to School;
• Phil Snaith, founder of Carmarthenshire Cycling Forum;
• Mark Waghorn, local architect and member of Transition Tywi;
• Dan Morris member of the national cycling charity CTC and a regional representative for Sustrans, which creates cycle routes;
• David Thorpe as a representative of Transition Tywi.
We have also spoken to Haydn Harris, who is liaising on behalf of Tregib School with the architects and Carmarthenshire Council and to Amanda Stone, who works with schools to get children fit and cycling and who supports the petition.
One of the issues is the security of the school and access from the proposed cycle routes, and where it should go, according to Mr Harris. For the route along the old railway line to the A483, there will need to be a diversion around the fairground, and we propose that the secure area is around the school buildings themselves and not the car park, enabling the cycle route passed through the school grounds which it could not do otherwise.
The school is scheduled to open in September 2016 so there is still time to implement the safe cycle access.
