To the Carlow community,

I am pleased to report that steps towards a resolution of this issue are well under way. Earlier this afternoon, Collin Pritchard and I met with the dean of students, Dr. Tim Phillips and President Humphery to put together a plan of action for addressing both the concerns about both the proposed policy and possible ramifications of it. At this time, there have been no contracts signed between Carlow and the University of Pittsburgh relating to the placement of Pitt students in Carlow’s dorms. Currently, the future of the policy remains up in the air as a mutually acceptable resolution is developed.

In this meeting, some additional information was provided to SGA that we can now pass on to you. First, both this semester and the projections for this fall show approximately 178 of our 441 dorm beds on campus are going to go unfilled. To the University, this presents an unfortunate reality of significant loss of potential revenue, that in turn comes back to bite students. Through the proposed partnership Carlow would regain that lost revenue so that it could be funneled into projects such as dormitory and laboratory improvements that students so often wish for.

Second, there was a significant miscommunication in the original announcement email. The University expressed their intent to place all Carlow students, and their preferred/needed accommodations prior to the placement of any university of Pitt students. Although the amount of single rooms and suites are limited, they will still be available to those with disability accommodations, preference, and suite seniority.

Furthermore, the University administration has stated that they will honor their integrity throughout the remainder of the resolution of this issue. In line with this, a decision has been made to honor the suite seniority rules that were put into effect during the 2020-2021 academic year, more details will follow to the residents of these rooms in the coming days.

Thank you again for your patience during this process. Again, we strongly encourage all our members to attend the open discussions on this policy and all things res-life related for this coming semester. The dates and locations of these sessions are:

Tuesday March 29, 11:00am-1:00pm in University Commons 2nd Floor
Wednesday March 30 3:00pm-5:00pm in University Commons 2nd Floor
Wednesday April 6 7:00pm-9:00pm in Franny’s located in Francis Warde Hall
