I want to personally thank everyone that has signed this petition. We are inching towards or goal of 100,000 signatures in 30 days. I thought I would take the time to share more on what we are trying to accomplish with this petition. I encourage you to take the time and read, then share this information with others.

In order to address the caregiver crisis in our country, it is imperative that we bring together those in need of care, family caregivers, direct care workers, and trained volunteers. This unified approach will change the way direct care workers and caregivers are perceived and provide them with the resources and support they need. By standing together as an industry, we can show our solidarity and strength.

Recognizing the Importance of Family Caregivers

Family caregivers and direct care workers are the most crucial pillars of the long-term care community. However, the stress and burden of caregiving are taking a toll on their health and finances, making it difficult for them to save for their own future care needs. Additionally, direct care workers are often underpaid, undervalued, and dependent on public assistance.

Our Goals for Family Caregivers

Our primary goal is to meet the needs of the largest group of unpaid family caregivers in the country. We aim to provide respite care and promote recognition and respect for their invaluable contributions to their care recipients and society. To achieve this, we will create a uniform that visually promotes recognition and respect for family caregivers as an integral part of the care team. We will also offer training, education, and practical help on patient advocacy and caregiving to empower family caregivers and reduce their stress. Furthermore, we will provide resources for respite care and alternative sources of income to alleviate their financial distress.

Supporting Family Caregivers

We firmly believe that family caregivers should have an explicit role in care plans and access to the necessary services and supports they require to provide care. This includes resources to alleviate financial hardships and promote retirement security, as well as flexible employment policies. To further support family caregivers, we will encourage the creation of volunteer "Care Team Partner Support Groups" to share the responsibility of caregiving. Our advocacy efforts will focus on ensuring that local, state, and national services and policies prioritize the needs of family caregivers and low-paid professional home care workers. We will raise community awareness about the challenges faced by family caregivers through education, advocacy, and ongoing polling.

Enhancing the Role of Direct Care Workers

The relationship between direct care workers and their clients is built on trust and care. To strengthen this bond, it is essential that direct care workers receive training, a living wage, and recognition for their vital role in the long-term care support sector. We recognize that direct care workers are often underpaid and undervalued, despite being essential to the long-term care services in our country. In the next ten years, the direct care workforce will generate more new jobs than any other occupation. Therefore, we need to advocate for federal investment in this workforce to strengthen it and improve economic development. Our goal is to ensure that direct care workers are deemed essential and provided with a living wage, as it is unfair for them to work full-time providing care and still live in poverty, which consequently impacts the quality of care provided.

Supporting Direct Care Workers

To support the direct care worker, we provide a platform that offers employment opportunities and adequate compensation. We believe that compensation should reflect the training and certifications acquired by the direct care worker throughout their career. Through our Community of Excellence Program, we collect information and assess the ongoing needs of direct care workers. We advocate for reliable data collection on this workforce to effectively monitor its state, which will lead to informed public policy and workforce initiatives that promote the highest quality of care.

Recognizing and Respecting Direct Care Workers

We strongly advocate for the rights, acknowledgement, and respect of direct care workers, as their contributions are vital in ensuring that the aging population has options to remain in their homes. Additionally, we aim to create leadership programs, mentorships, and training opportunities to prepare future direct care workers and amplify our voice now and in the future. Ongoing training will also be provided to create a pathway to promotion for direct care workers. Moreover, we seek to raise public awareness about the role of direct care workers and Care Team Partners in easing the financial and psychological burdens faced by the 53 million family caregivers residing in urban and rural areas.

Our commitment is to advocate for and support the needs of family caregivers and direct care workers at the local, state, and national levels. Let us join forces to ensure that those who provide essential care receive the recognition, support, and resources they deserve.

Please share your challenges and the obstacles you face as a family caregiver or direct care worker.
