I have looked everywhere to try and find a good reason that capybaras are not legal in New Mexico. If we look into why capybaras are illegal in California we find this, “If they're exposed to the wild, they could harm crops or native wildlife.” (From https://capybaratips.com
This is probably the reason that capybaras are illegal in New Mexico. Although in this petition we are aiming at permitted ownership of a capybara. To get a permit in other states you have to have someone inspect your land and see if you have the right space to keep one. Once permitted you will be able to own a capybara, this is most likely how they would do it. (If legalized in New Mexico)
All I can find on why capybaras are illegal is this, “This New Mexico law prohibits the importation, transportation, holding for breeding, releasing, or selling of a sell a live feral hog or the operation of a commercial feral hog hunting enterprise. Sugar glider, wallaby, kangaroo, capybara.” (Unknown Wedsite)
Off this, you may think about how it doesn’t say specifically you can’t own a Capybara. I got excited for a moment but after doing more research, I found this “Arizona, Arkansas, Texas, Florida, Indiana, Nevada, Washington, North Carolina, Tennessee; I have also been told parts of New York state“. It never mentioned New Mexico Sadly, meaning it is illegal.
Thank you to everyone who has signed this petition, and I would be very grateful if you would share it! The more signs this petition gets the more of a chance of this going through! Thank you!
