ITV News has finally responded to the #CaptionTheNews campaign... by failing to acknowledge the growing number of people who are calling on the broadcaster to make its social media content accessible to everyone.

Last week, a spokesperson told me: "We always take viewer feedback onboard and are continually reviewing our approaches to make ITV News content as inclusive as possible.

“However, we have to balance this with upholding the highest standards of accuracy, which auto-generated captions on Instagram and TikTok don’t always meet.

“We post videos on other platforms where audiences can choose to turn on captions, and every Friday we publish a signed news bulletin on itv.com, which includes a weekly roundup of headlines across the UK and world.”

If auto-generated captions on Instagram and TikTok don't meet your quality standards, then why on earth are you allowing users to turn on captions on "other platforms", when these are automatic captions as well?

And if Instagram and TikTok's automatic captions are insufficient, the alternative isn't to just give up on making your content accessible altogether. The alternative is to manually caption your content.

The alternative is to Caption The News.

Thanks so much to everyone who has signed and shared this petition so far. It would be amazing to get this up to the triple digits. ITV News clearly doesn't think this petition is worth paying attention to right now. It's ignoring comments calling for action on Instagram, while having enough time to browse my Instagram Stories to see what I'm saying about them. They are aware of the issue, and yet they're doing nothing. Don't let them brush this aside - share the petition with as many people as you can.
