Met with the new Superintendent last week and he advised us that nothing is going to change this year regarding our kitesurfing access. He is new to Cape Cod National Seashore and is still learning everything there is to know about the park so he can make informed decisions in the future. He agreed to revisit the issue with us next winter to discuss the possibility of finding areas of access in each town incorporated by the Seashore. With that in mind it is imperative that we abide by the current restrictions so we can demonstrate that we are a responsible, trustworthy group. That means not kitesurfing outside of the designated boundaries as indicated by the signs and continued in a straight line perpendicular to the beach up to a 1/4 mile out on the water. We should also be respectful to the park rangers and other beach users, as well as abiding by all other park rules and regulations. If we can have a successful season we may have the potential to gain more access. And he assured us the new management WILL be watching us in order to become familiar with what we do and how it affects the Seashore. So now is the time for us to prove what we have been saying all along: that we are one of the more responsible user groups, that we are not degrading park resources or harming wildlife, and as a no-trace sport kitesurfing is the kind of activity the National Seashore should be allowing not banning.
Supt Carlstrom has made the effort to preserve our 1.75 miles of access despite plover activity in the area. He has demonstrated a willingness to support our sport that the previous superintendent didn't seem to have. Let's show him some support back this summer and have a safe & responsible season. Thank you everyone who visits and kitesurfs CCNS for keeping these considerations in mind.
