Bring Phoenix Wright: Great Ace Attorney to USA players!
The Issue
Capcom's recently announced addition to the Ace Attorney series, The Great Ace Attorney, will be the start of a new series, according to game producer Shintaro Kojima in a statement to Famitsu magazine (via Siliconera), but unfortunately Capcom France released a Statement saying that the game is "Not intended for Western Audiences."
After Capcom confirmed its upcoming Ace Attorney 6 will be getting a Western release, many fans of the series were hoping this meant a translation of The Great Ace Attorney (Dai Gyakuten Saiban in Japan) was also in the works. Unfortunately, it looks like that doesn’t appear to be the case as Capcom France has confirmed there currently are not plans for The Great Ace Attorney to be release in the West.
Responding to a fan’s question on Twitter for more information regarding The Great Ace Attorney, Capcom France responded with the following, translated from French by Bing, “Unfortunately the title is not intended for released in the West.” While the translation may be a little wonky when translated to English, the message is very clear: don’t expect The Great Ace Attorney in the West.
"While it's not a main-numbered Ace Attorney title, it's the start of a new series called The Great Ace Attorney," Kojima said. "I believe that it's becoming something that can show that it's not simply just a derivative title. We can't say too much about it for the time being, but we'll be revealing more on the characters and their backgrounds next time, which we hope you all can look forward to. It's really becoming something that we have high expectations for, so please look forward to it!"
The Great Ace Attorney will include a new female character, Susato Mikotoba, who is described by Kojima as a "graceful Japanese woman, a proper girl who does everything the proper way."
The game will be "quite different" to the previous Ace Attorney releases, Takumi added.
"It's been a while since I've participated in making a new Ace Attorney game, and things are a little different from the earlier days; however, as usual, I'll be doing my best and putting all my effort into it, so that this one [The Great Ace Attorney] won't lose to the past games I've worked on."
Takumi has worked on the Ace Attorney series since the 2001 original Nintendo DS title, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
The thing is...USA players don't mind that it will have a japanese setting, in fact many enjoy that setting and the genre of the game. There are many Western players that embrace that lifestyle themselves, and otaku culture in general. With the increase of cosplay and other expressions of American respect of Japanese culture, there is no excuse or reason for not releasing it for western audiences, even a subbed version alone would be hugely successful. I mean, for goodness sake, it includes Sherlock FREAKIN' Holmes, who the heck wouldn't wanna play that!!!? And with this game being the new start for a series, that basically means that we will not be getting any of the new set of Phoenix wrist games and fans will be forced to import the new games, or wait for translation fandubs or hacked game patches.
Capcom, we plead with you, please find at least some way to get this into western hands, even a digital subbed release would have big success.
If it was an option, and you released the game as a non-union project, I'm sure there would be many voice talent willing to work for less, just to help bring this to USA, for such a groundbreaking game.
Sincerely, the Phoenix Wright fanbase.
