Cap Rental Increases to a Maximum of 3% Annually in Bergen County, NJ
Cap Rental Increases to a Maximum of 3% Annually in Bergen County, NJ
The Issue
I am a resident of Bergen County, NJ and like many others, I rent my home. Recently, I was hit with an unexpected 10% increase in my rent. This sudden hike is not only financially straining but also deeply unsettling for those of us trying to maintain stability in our lives.
In the current economic climate where wages are not increasing at the same rate as living costs, such drastic rental increases are unsustainable for many residents. According to data from the U.S Census Bureau, over 30% of households in Bergen County are renters. Many of these individuals and families could be facing similar financial strain due to unregulated rental increases.
We propose that a cap be placed on annual rental increases at no more than 3%. This will provide some level of protection against unpredictable and potentially unaffordable hikes in rent while still allowing landlords a reasonable return on their investment.
By implementing this cap, we can help ensure that renting remains an affordable option for all residents of Bergen County. We urge our local government officials to consider this proposal seriously and act swiftly for the benefit of all renters within our community.
Please sign this petition if you believe that everyone deserves access to affordable housing without fear or uncertainty about their future living expenses.
