Cap Rental Costs to Alleviate the Financial Strain on Struggling Households
The Issue
I am a single woman who works both a full-time and part-time job just to keep up with my bills. Despite this, I fight a constant battle against escalating monthly rent prices without any government assistance, because my income is deemed too high. Yet, I'm living paycheck to paycheck. My story is not unique. Many people, like me, find that their wages have remained stagnant while the cost of living, particularly rent, continues to rise unregulated. Left unchecked, this unjust trend will continue to push our financial limits, making it increasingly difficult to stay afloat.
The National Low Income Housing Coalition reports an alarming statistic that in no state can a minimum-wage worker afford a two-bedroom rental home at fair market rent by working a standard 40-hour week. Additionally, a RENTCafé nationwide report illustrating rent prices in major U.S. cities also shows a consistent yearly increase, further highlighting the urgency of this issue.
This petition calls for an establishment of a reasonable rental price cap or control to ensure that hard-working individuals, like us, are not being driven to the wall. The time for change is now. Join us in fighting for a sustainable, and fair rental market for everyone. Please sign this petition.
