CANCER CARE FOR OUR COMMUNITY
The issue
Do you know that it is estimated that over 450 people per day will be diagnosed with cancer in Australia. It will either be you, a family member, a co worker , your neighbour etc.
Here in the Douglas Shire alone we have a population of over 13000 people.
Imagine being diagnosed with Cancer and having to travel a few hours to get your life saving treatment. First of all there is the initial shock of diagnosis. Then there is a gruelling wait for specialist appointments , blood tests and scans before any treatment can even be started. Once treatment is decided, unfortunately none of it can be done at Mossman Hospital as firstly they do not have the space or any of the facilities needed.
Imagine having Chemotherapy and feeling so sick afterwards and then having to travel down the highway to get home. Or having Radiotherapy and your skin is so burnt you are unable to put your seatbelt on?
We NEED testimonials from locals who have had to endure this and who wished they could of had some or all of their treatment closer to home.
We NEED big business to sponsor this cause and donate money.
We NEED council and government to listen to what the people want .
I am not naive, I know that something like this does not come cheap and there is so much involved but we NEED to start somewhere. We are lucky enough to have organisations like Pink in the Tropics , Friends of the Foundation and KIND who have worked and continue to work endlessly to raise much needed funds to support our community.
Here is some of my story about this cause and why I am so passionate
about this cause.
My husband has been battling cancer and its on going side effects on and off for the last 25 years. Last year he was diagnosed with a metastatic Melanoma , which means the cancer had spread to 5 different parts of his body . It was over a month before he could get any treatment as the wait for a Pet Scan was taking forever to be booked . It was booked and then cancelled 3 times. Imagine the stress of wondering if the cancer was spreading while we were waiting for this scan? In the end after many teary phone calls we were able to get the scan done in Brisbane. Yes, we were grateful for that appointment but it just is not good enough.
I am hoping you can all take a few minutes out of your day and sign this petition and also SHARE , so we can get as many signatures as possible.
