The Issue

Imagine living in a city where, every time you drive past a traffic light or into a public area, your vehicle is tracked, analyzed, and recorded. This isn't a dystopian future scenario but the current reality in Westerville, Ohio, where the city has contracted with Flock Safety to deploy license plate readers around our streets. These devices capture and store data about all of our movements, a disturbing invasion of privacy that strikes at the heart of our civic freedoms.

As a resident and homeowner in Westerville, I am deeply troubled by how these surveillance tactics affect our communities. The privacy and autonomy we once enjoyed as citizens are under threat, and for what? There is no clear evidence to suggest that widespread surveillance significantly reduces crime rates. In fact, studies have shown that such measures can disproportionately target marginalized communities, leading to increased scrutiny and social injustice.

The city insists that these measures enhance public safety, yet there is little transparency about how the data is collected, stored, or utilized. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, data from license plate readers often ends up being stored indefinitely, potentially exploited for purposes beyond their original intent. Furthermore, the potential for data breaches poses an additional threat to our personal security.

Instead of engaging in Orwellian surveillance tactics, Westerville could look into community-based solutions that focus on social services, mental health support, and community policing. These strategies are proven to address the root causes of crime more effectively without infringing on our civil liberties.

Let's urge the Westerville City Council to prioritize our privacy and civil rights by terminating their contract with Flock Safety and exploring more community-focused safety measures. It's time for us to stand together as a community to preserve our freedoms.

Please sign this petition to demand that Westerville acts in the best interest of its citizens and revokes the contract with Flock Safety. Together, we can protect our privacy and promote a safer community based on trust, not surveillance.
