Cancel Trump’s movie tariff

Cancel Trump’s movie tariff
The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the resurgence of former President Donald Trump's proposal to impose a 100% tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. I vividly remember the waves of uncertainty this policy caused during his previous term, and it appears we are once again on the brink of a detrimental cultural and economic shift.
Donald Trump has been quoted saying, "Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing 'candy from a baby.'" However, the narrative that foreign films are a threat to American filmmaking misrepresents the reality of our globalized world, where the film industry thrives on collaboration and cultural exchange.
Imposing such a tariff may have dire consequences for the diversity and richness of the American film experience. Foreign films contribute not only to our cultural landscape but also play a role in our economy, supporting thousands of jobs in distribution, critique, and consumption.
According to the Motion Picture Association, the film and television industry supports 2.5 million jobs in the United States. The introduction of a severe tariff could disrupt these jobs by altering the competitive landscape and reducing the variety of films available to American audiences. Additionally, in 2019, the U.S. had a trade surplus in the film and television services sector, suggesting that the international exchange is beneficial for the American economy.
We must not overlook the artistic and storytelling value of international films, which offer unique perspectives and narratives that enrich our cultural tapestry. Furthermore, such a tariff may incite retaliation from other countries, potentially limiting the international reach of American films and harming the domestic industry Trump aims to protect.
I urge policymakers and concerned citizens to consider the broader implications of this tariff proposal. It is not simply a matter of economic figures, but one of cultural identity and freedom of choice. By rejecting this proposal, we stand in support of a film industry that represents a world beyond borders.
Please join me in calling for the immediate cessation of this tariff consideration. Sign this petition to protect the diversity and vitality of our cinematic landscape.
