Cancel the homophobic 'Heated Rivalry' series

The Issue

Throughout my life, as a gay man, I have repeatedly come up against the wall of homophobia. It's a pervasive force that has manifested in numerous ways—from the overt discrimination seen in traditional settings to the patronizing attitudes often found among those styling themselves as allies. Even within the LGBTQ+ community itself, I've encountered internalized homophobia. This multifaceted discrimination not only disheartens but continues to fuel my determination to stand up, speak out, and demand genuine representation that does justice to our lived experiences. The recent work "Heated Rivalry" by Rachael Reid has catalyzed this renewed call for authentic gay storytelling.

"Heated Rivalry"—a series that purports to center on gay male life—is, in actuality, a disservice to those it claims to represent. It reduces our complex stories and experiences to mere fodder for entertainment, sanitized to appease a straight, predominantly white female demographic aged 20 to 50. This series, produced by HBO/Crave and spearheaded by Reid along with actors Conner Storrie and Hudson Williams, adopts an approach that is not only homophobic but fetishistic. It misrepresents and exploits the nuances of gay life, boiling down our rich narratives into digestible content for those who cannot truly relate.

The presence of such media perpetuates harmful stereotypes and hijacks the vibrant narratives of gay men, replacing them with hollow imitations. Allowing authors and creatives with no authentic ties or understanding of gay experiences to head these projects perpetuates a cycle of misrepresentation and misunderstanding. This series is a glaring example of how the genuine voices of gay men—our stories of love, struggle, and triumph—are continually overshadowed or outright dismissed in favor of narratives that pander to mainstream appetites.

We deserve media that is reflective of our realities, penned and directed by those who have lived it. The gay community has countless stories waiting to be told authentically by writers, directors, and artists who have walked the path. It is time for platforms like HBO/Crave to step back and reassess the content they choose to elevate. To give real gay storytellers the opportunity to share their truths.

It is crucial that we demand the cancellation of the "Heated Rivalry" series and push for its complete dismantlement. By clearing the way of these inauthentic narratives, we can cultivate a media environment where the true diversity and richness of gay male life are given the spotlight they deserve.

I urge everyone who believes in genuine representation and is against the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes to join this fight. Sign this petition to tell HBO/Crave and those involved in this production that it’s time for a genuine and respectful portrayal of gay lives—one that celebrates our experiences without diluting them.
