Cancel semester 2 diplomas for Alberta high school students
Cancel semester 2 diplomas for Alberta high school students
The Issue
Cancelling second semester diploma exams would ensure equal treatment for all Alberta students. First semester students already received relief because of lost instructional time and disruptions. Second semester students deserve the same consideration so that they are not placed at a disadvantage simply because of the timing of their courses.
Students are still recovering from the recent strike and the ongoing adjustments to classroom pacing. Asking students to prepare for high stakes standardized exams before full academic stability returns would create unnecessary stress and unfair conditions.
Second semester also includes some of the most demanding diploma courses such as English and Social Studies. These subjects require complex written responses, deep analysis, and preparation time that many students have struggled to regain after the strike. Students in these courses especially deserve the same support and flexibility already given to first semester students.
Removing the remaining diploma exams would not harm post secondary opportunities. Universities regularly accept school awarded grades and Alberta has confirmed that missed exams will not block graduation or admission. School awarded grades provide an accurate reflection of learning across the year without additional pressure from standardized testing during a disrupted academic cycle.
Cancelling second semester diploma exams would create a fair and consistent system for all students, protect those in academically heavy diploma courses, reduce stress during a year of instability, and allow teachers and learners to focus on meaningful education instead of high stakes testing.
We urge you to sign this petition to ensure equal treatment for all Alberta high school students this academic year. By canceling the second-semester diploma exams, we can focus on our education in a supportive and balanced environment.
