The Issue

My dad was profoundly grateful for the valour and sacrifice of American forces who stood shoulder to shoulder with British soldiers during World War II. Their shared struggles forged a bond between our two nations.

However, recent comments by President Donald Trump, questioning the frontline contributions of British soldiers in Afghanistan, have caused distress and upset among UK service personnel, veterans, and families of the fallen.

Trump's comment that non-American troops "stayed a little back" from the front line has overshadowed the sacrifices of thousands of British and other soldiers.

457 UK military personnel were killed in Afghanistan after the USA asked for help from members of the UN following the 9/11 terrorist attack. In total 1,160 non-American troops lost their lives fighting alongside American forces.

Data on the BBC shows UK losses were comparable on a per-capita basis with those of the United States (7 fallen heroes per 1 million citizens).

This petition is a call for the UK Government to examine the timing and circumstances of the state visit by King Charles to the USA. In an era when appearances and gestures carry significant meaning, proceeding with the visit as planned risks sending mixed signals to our military communities and all who uphold their sacrifice.

I urge you to support this petition to press the UK Government into action, for the sake of honouring the sacrifices of our military and upholding the valued relationship between our nations. Please sign to voice your support for postponing King Charles' visit until this diplomatic tension is addressed and rectified.
