cancel exams for Institut collégial Vincent Massey Collegiate

The Issue

Exams at Vincent Massey should be canceled as COVID-19 is still alive and still very much around. The omicron variant is the fastest spreading strain of COVID we have dealt with so far. The numbers are representing an increase in both COVID related hospitalizations and deaths. Vincent Massey is a school with a considerably large population of over 1000 students, which makes the spread of this highly infectious disease a large concern. This, along with the uncertainty regarding exams and the lack of time to prepare has caused lots of stress for many students. Students have not had proper exams since 2019, students aren’t familiar with the format and don’t necessarily know how to prepare (let alone in under 2 weeks). Exams should instead be confirmed for the end of the year when this virus will have likely slowed down considerably. This change would also provide a situation in which students can properly prepare for end of year exams, rather than cramming a month of studying into less than a fortnight. Several other schools in Winnipeg such as Oak Park High School, Kelvin High School, Shaftesbury High School, and Collège Jeanne-Sauvé have already canceled their exams. Vincent Massey should follow the lead of these schools in consideration for student mental and physical health.
