Cancel Desalination Plant at Manori - Save Environment - Save Fisheries
The Issue
Mumbai is a land of rivers,fresh water bodies and excessive rainfall. Heavy showers get the City flooded within hours. Yet, Mumbai experiences acute water shortage.To solve this issue our civic bodies have proposed a Desalination Plant at Manori Village,Malad west, Mumbai.
Desalination Plant is a factory where salt is removed from salt water in order to make the water suitable for drinking and irrigation.
During the recent civic budget presentation, a provision of Rs 200 crore for 2023-24 was proposed by the BMC for a Desalination Project at Manori Village, which is estimated to cost Rs 1,600 crore, with an additional Rs 1,900 crore to be spent on operations and maintenance for 20 years. The BMC officials recently announced that they're most likely to float tenders for the project by the end of October.
Manori Village is a part of eco sensitive Dharavi Island situation across Marve beach. It is covered by lush mangroves. It is not a DESERT to set up a DESALINATION PLANT.
One of the main sources of pollution from desalination is the brine waste generated during the process. Brine is the highly concentrated, salt-rich water that is produced as a by-product of desalination. The brine is often discharged back into the ocean, where it can have negative impacts on the marine environment. The high salt content of brine can cause changes in the water chemistry and harm aquatic life, including fish, crustaceans, mangroves and other marine organisms.The ill effects of Desalination are many.
The costal belt of Mumbai and Maharashtra depends of fishing for their livelihood. In Mumbai we call our fishermen DARIYACHA RAJA. The desalination plant will surely destroy the already dwindling fishing activities.
The fund alloted for this project should be used to rejuvenate our already existing water bodies and to encourage rainwater harvesting rather than destroying our Koli Community and the ecosystem.
