The Issue

The annual Burning Man festival, known for its celebration of radical self-reliance and community, is scheduled for 2026. However, in the aftermath of the devastating wildfires around Pyramid Lake and Reno, Nevada, it has become critical to reassess where our priorities and resources are allocated.

This year, more than ever before, we have an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity with our neighbors who have lost their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones to the unforgiving fires. By canceling Burning Man 2026, we can redirect the vast resources typically used for the festival to assist with the recovery and rebuilding efforts.

The scale of resources involved in organizing Burning Man is staggering. Each year, thousands of generators, estimated between 8,000 and 12,000, are deployed to power everything from camps and art installations to showers and cafes. Imagine these generators instead powering evacuation shelters, temporary medical facilities, and homes grappling with the aftermath of disaster.

Additionally, approximately 2,500 to 4,000 box trucks carrying vital supplies like food, camping gear, and art pieces make their way to Black Rock Desert annually. By rerouting these trucks, we could deliver essential resources and construction materials to communities in dire need across Nevada.

The water, fuel, ice, and other logistics necessary for hosting Burning Man could be reallocated to service the immediate necessities of those impacted by wildfires. In a time when survival and recovery are paramount, our beloved festival's supplies and services could provide critical relief to thousands.

Cancelling Burning Man 2026 is not about ending a tradition but about shifting focus temporarily to a greater cause: aiding human lives at risk. It stands as a testament to our values—a commitment to compassion, responsibility, and action in the face of adversity.

Join fellow DSA members, liberals, fascists, and all those who believe in making a difference by signing this petition. Let's stand united and let our actions speak louder than words. Help us repurpose the festival's resources for an urgent cause that aligns with the core tenets of Burning Man: community, participation, and leave no trace.

Sign the petition today and advocate for reallocating the resources from Burning Man 2026 to communities around Pyramid Lake and Reno devastated by wildfires. Let's turn our collective effort into tangible support to help rebuild and restore hope.
