Canadian Universities’ Call to Action for Iranian Students and Community Members

The Issue

Since December 28, 2025, widespread protests in Iran have escalated dramatically. Initially triggered by economic hardship and soaring prices, the demonstrations have grown into nationwide anti-government protests, challenging nearly 50 years of clerical rule.

Over the past 18 days, the situation has intensified. Different sources estimate that between 2,000 and 12,000 civilians have lost their lives. Over the last five days, Iranian authorities have imposed internet and phone blackouts, making communication and access to information extremely difficult. Security forces have reportedly used assault rifles and metal pellets against civilians, resulting in mass arrests and casualties.

These developments have directly affected Iranian students in Canada, many of whom have family, friends, and academic collaborators in Iran. The crisis has created emotional distress and uncertainty that makes it difficult for students to meet university deadlines or pay application fees.

We also wish to express our appreciation for the support Canadian universities demonstrated during the Women, Life, Freedom movement, which reflected a strong commitment to human rights, academic freedom, and social responsibility. That solidarity was deeply meaningful, and we hope universities will continue to uphold these values by supporting Iranian students in the current crisis.

We, the undersigned, call on Canadian universities to take immediate action to support Iranian students by:

  • Extending deadlines for Iranian international students, providing additional time to navigate these uncertain circumstances.
  • Providing application fee waivers for Iranian students seeking admission to Canadian universities.

Supporting Iranian students during this crisis is crucial. Canada is home to the second-largest Iranian diaspora, and Iranian students have long contributed to Canadian academia, research, and society. Taking these actions demonstrates that Canadian universities stand for human dignity, inclusion, and academic freedom, and ensures that students can continue their education despite circumstances beyond their control.
