The Issue
The purpose of this campaign is to encourage Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (CNRL or the Company) to recognize the benefits of remote work and to consider offering greater flexibility for employees to perform their work outside of the office.
This impacts you if:
- You enjoy the benefits of working together in-person in the office but would like the ability to work remotely a few days a week.
- You'd prefer to work in the office everyday but would like the flexibility to work remotely if necessary to accommodate personal circumstances (appointments, family, etc.)
Summary:
The rationale for using this platform is to provide a voice for employees on a subject that we have been shut out on. Many companies including CNRL’s peers have surveyed their staff to determine what the future of office work may look like for their organization. These companies are doing this because it’s inevitable that change and additional flexibility is coming in the corporate world. When the question on support for remote work was presented at our staff shareholder meeting the Company’s response dismissing this was a fait accompli. While we have the utmost respect for and confidence in CNRL’s senior management to guide this company we need to push back on the notion that our success and ability to create value is rooted to being in the office 5 days a week.
The past year and a half has been challenging and enlightening for all of us. We have proven that in spite of working apart we were able to meet deadlines, execute projects, continuously improve and create tremendous value for the Company. There is no dispute that there are many benefits to working together in the office. We want to continue to leverage those benefits and believe they can be improved by giving employees time and space away from our corporate offices to live more healthy and intentional lives.
World class organizations are now offering hybrid/flexible solutions for their employees. This is our opportunity to encourage CNRL to embrace this future and be not only an industry leader but a global leader by doing the same. With this being said, it is important to note...
- We recognize the privilege we have as employees of a financially sound, well managed company that has allowed many of us to work safely during the Covid-19 pandemic.
- We recognize there may not be a one-size fits all solution given the diversity and job requirements across the company's business units. VP's and Managers should be empowered to work with their teams to determine how much flexibility could be offered while still providing opportunities to leverage our ability to work together and develop people.
- We recognize that any decision made towards this goal should continually be evaluated. As shareholders in the Company we want to see continued growth and success. This is only possible if we continue to work efficiently and effectively in the office and, if successful, outside of the office.
What you can do?
