Protect Indo-Canadians from violent actions and threats

Protect Indo-Canadians from violent actions and threats
The Issue
We are law-abiding and tax-paying Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Indian origin. We write to you with great dismay on a deeply disturbing new trend: Canadians of Indian origin residing in Brampton, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary, are being intimidated verbally and physically and are also receiving calls threatening violence and rape for expressing their views. Please see the article in The Hindustan Times linked below.
It should be no surprise that immigrants are likely to discuss topics connected to their homeland. However the expectation is that these discussions can be held in a manner which does not compromise their safety and security. While it was never our intent to drag Canadians as a whole in to debates regarding farm laws in India, the statements by Prime Minister Trudeau, Mr. Jagmeet Singh, and other politicians has unfortunately already done so. Their statements have thrust Canadians in to an issue that is an internal matter for the people of India and their democratically-elected government.
This unprecedented situation affecting the Indo-Canadian community has shaken us to the core. We feel that we are unable to safely express our views in an open manner without fear of potential retribution. We are therefore circulating this petition to call to the attention of our elected leaders that it is their duty and obligation to protect the rights of all Canadians.
As Canadian citizens:
1.) we expect to exercise our right to free speech without intimidation, threats, or violence; and
2.) we expect that perpetrators of such hateful acts are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law; and
3.) we expect that leaders across the political spectrum – especially those that have already involved themselves in this issue – to assert our rights and also condemn the extremists who are perpetrating such acts.
It is important to note that this petition does not in any way seek to malign any person or group of people, regardless of their background. It merely calls upon the elected leaders in Canada to actively preserve the values that attracts so many immigrants of different backgrounds to this wonderful country and ensure that the rights and freedoms of all citizens are protected.
We thank you for your cooperation.
