STOP systemic discrimination in Canadian Physiotherapy Context.

The Issue

WE, the IEPT’s in Canada say that:

All Internationally Educated Physiotherapists in Canada deserves the right to practice our choosen Physiotherapy Profession free of discrimination, free of any barriers to employment and free of work certification restriction.

The clinical exam and/or post graduate clinical evaluation requirement be abolished as this is a barrier to equality, diversity and inclusion in Canadian Physiotherapy Context.

Many IEPT’s in Canada have lost employment when they failed the clinical exam 2/3 times. This breach the section 7 of the Charter which states that “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice”.

The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (“CAPR”) impugned bylaws, policies and regulations has adverse impact to internationally trained Physiotherapist in Canada. The CAPR stated in their policies that one should take the exam within 2 years and that the credentialling assessment expires. These bylaws/Policies does not affect Canadian Educated Physiotherapists as they do not undergo credentilliating process. Therefore,  the CAPR and Colleges breach section 15.(1) of the Charter. Which states that “Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.

The clinical exam or post graduate clinical evaluation is the major barrier  to independent practice and bar ourselves from being Physiotherapist in Canada.
