Dear Hypatia Day supporters, we reached a historic landmark of 1,000 votes. On the night of October 31 the 1,000th vote was cast; the next morning, November 1, there is unprecedented increase by 60 more up-votes! This is a strong message to the Canadian Parliament, which is the first target of this petition. After showing initial interest, the Canadian government became silent and seems disinterested. The petition is absolutely non-controversial and the government's behavior is hard to understand. But again we can't approach UNESCO if we have no support by a national body or international organization. Now we count supporters in 53 countries. The latest newcomers are Bangladesh and Fiji. Sadly, Asia and Africa are still underrepresented. True, they have their own astronomical traditions and probably their own outstanding female professionals to honor. But Hypatia has clear record of her accomplishments in sciences (math and astronomy) and, besides, is a noncontroversial figure from ethical side. As a resident of fifth century Alexandria, she belong to both Europe and Africa at once, and thus to the entire world. She is unique in many ways. There are societies and journals that carry her name. There is an interesting astronomy initiative, called Hypatia Catalog: http://www.nataliehinkel.com/hypatia-catalog.html I propose each of you initiate his/her own petition in the native country targeting local parliament. European Union Parliament can be the first to support this initiative. United effort will finally bring its fruit. Having Hypatia Day = Women in Science Day is just a matter of time.
