Since the closure of the Vic West postal outlet on October 28, this matter has moved beyond a local dispute and into federal oversight.
Canada Post is currently under investigation by the Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada following a formal complaint regarding its refusal to disclose records related to the closure decision. An investigator has been assigned, has confirmed receipt of additional evidence and is actively reviewing the case.
As part of this process, Canada Post has now acknowledged in writing that the decision to close the Vic West outlet was made during an internal virtual meeting and that no separate written reports or analyses were prepared specific to this location. This admission stands in contrast to earlier explanations referencing “market needs,” “appropriate service levels” and a “comprehensive review.”
At the local level, we have already moved on.
Since the closure:
Canada Post signage has been removed.
Renovation is underway to repurpose the former postal space for pharmacy use.
The location has transitioned to serving the community as a UPS and Purolator access point for parcel drop-off and pickup.
The neighbourhood has permanently lost a walkable Canada Post outlet, with no replacement provided.
The petition therefore continues for a different and broader purpose.
This is no longer about reopening a closed outlet. It is about accountability, transparency and understanding how decisions to eliminate public postal services are made, documented and justified, especially when they affect growing, urban communities.
