Update:
Thank you to everyone who has supported this petition so far. We’ve now reached over 440 signatures, showing how strongly the community stands behind keeping the Vic West postal outlet open.
Following the widespread media attention earlier this month, including CTV News, CFAX Radio and the Times Colonist, many residents urged us to start this petition so their voices could be heard directly. Since then, hundreds have signed in just two weeks.
Despite this, Canada Post has not responded to the community’s calls for transparency. They continue to justify the closure by citing vague “market needs,” while ignoring clear evidence that Vic West is a growing, walkable community of more than 8,000 residents, with over 2,000 new homes planned.
Canada Post is directing residents to use outlets located in downtown Victoria or downtown Esquimalt, each about 2 km away. For many seniors, residents without vehicles, small businesses, and people with mobility challenges, this is simply not a reasonable or accessible alternative.
Canada Post’s own General Manager of Retail Network Operations confirmed in writing that this decision “is not related to poor performance or costs.”
Our outlet is cost-neutral and revenue-generating to Canada Post. We cover all operating expenses, while they only pay a small fixed commission. Closing it means eliminating a profitable service point that costs them nothing to run.
In their letter, Canada Post said the decision was made “in the best interests of managing their network.” There is no mention of the public, the community, or the Canada Post Charter, which commits the corporation to providing convenient and accessible service to Canadians.
This decision appears to be more about optics, to appear to address financial problems, than about sound management. By closing income-generating, cost-neutral outlets, Canada Post is worsening its own finances while undermining public access to essential services.
The postal strike will eventually end, but communities like Vic West will be left to deal with the long-term shortage of local postal service if this closure proceeds.
Please continue sharing this petition with your neighbours, friends, and colleagues. Every signature strengthens our message to Canada Post and the federal government:
✅ Keep the Vic West postal outlet open.
✅ Conduct a transparent, evidence-based review.
✅ Stop eliminating cost-neutral, revenue-generating outlets that serve communities well.
Together, we can make our voices impossible to ignore.
