To me, this serves as a constant reminder of a colonial past that should have been left behind when we gained independence in 1970. This flag was adopted in the wake of a colonial era marked by racism, discrimination, hatred, slavery, and abuse. Sign this petition to urge Fiji to change its flag so that it reflects Fiji more and the United Kingdom less. The United Kingdom no longer plays a pivotal role in Fiji. Let the Union Jack remain on the flags of the Turks and Caicos, Bermuda, Akrotiri and Dhekelia, and the like—after all, those are their territories—but not Fiji. We must press the Fijian government to consider holding a vote to decide the future of the nation's representation.
